Multiplying by nine

Multiplying by nine looks hard, but it is multiplying by ten and one subtraction. Nine is ten minus one, so:

7 × 9 = 70 − 7 = 63

Take the number ten times and subtract the number itself. 4 × 9 is 40 − 4, which is 36. 8 × 9 is 80 − 8, which is 72.

For single-digit numbers, the answer can be checked two ways at once. The tens digit is always one less than the number you multiplied, so for seven the answer starts with six. And the digits of the answer always add up to nine: 6 + 3 = 9. If either check fails, the answer is wrong.

The nines are where the technique pays off most in the times table, because without it every one of them has to be recalled separately. Once it sticks, try it in the real game.
