Halving in division

Halving is easy to do in your head, and dividing by four and by eight comes out of it almost for free.

By four it is two halvings:

156 : 4 = 78 : 2 = 39

By eight it is three:

216 : 8 = 108 : 4 = 54 : 2 = 27

This is the mirror image of multiplying by eight. There you double three times, here you halve three times.

By five it goes the other way. Five is half of ten, so double and then divide by ten:

135 : 5 = 270 : 10 = 27

When the number is exactly divisible by five, the doubled number ends in zero, so dividing by ten just removes the final zero and all the work is one doubling. The same idea as on the halving and doubling page, only on the division side.

Fifty and twenty-five work the same way through a hundred. Fifty is half of a hundred, so double and divide by a hundred. Twenty-five is a quarter of a hundred, so multiply by four and divide by a hundred:

1700 : 50 = 3400 : 100 = 34

850 : 25 = 3400 : 100 = 34

Practise

The exercise mixes all five. Dividing by eight takes three steps, the rest take two.
