Dividing in parts

Division is not a separate skill but a multiplication question asked backwards. 56 : 8 means “eight times what makes 56”. Once the times table is there, small divisions come with it.

For a bigger dividend, split it into parts that divide easily:

344 : 8 = 320 : 8 + 24 : 8 = 40 + 3 = 43

Pick a round multiple of the divisor that fits inside the dividend: 8 × 40 is 320. The remaining 24 is another times-table fact. Add the two quotients together.

The part does not have to be the largest one possible. 344 : 8 can just as well be split as 240 : 8 + 104 : 8 if that comes to mind more easily, and the answer is the same.

It is the same idea as multiplying in parts, only the other way round.

Practise

Splitting into parts works for any divisor, but you gain most when the divisor is a single digit and the first part is a round multiple of it. The exercise asks for all three steps separately.
