Multiplying in parts

Multiplying a two-digit number needs no new skill, only a split. Take the bigger factor apart into its tens and its units, multiply each separately, and add the results.

17 × 6 = 10 × 6 + 7 × 6 = 60 + 42 = 102

The tens part is always easy, because it is the times table plus a zero. The units part is pure times table. The third step is an addition, and adding from the left is the tool for that.

The same method works when the other factor is two-digit as well. Split only one factor, so there are still just two partial products. In practice it is worth splitting the factor with the smaller units digit.

This is not a trick but the general method, and that is exactly why it is worth mastering: once splitting works, no product is out of reach any more.

Practise

Splitting does not get harder as the numbers grow: 17 × 6 and 47 × 6 use exactly the same move, only the tens part is bigger. The exercise asks for all three steps separately.
