Difference of squares

When two numbers being multiplied sit the same distance from the same number, the product comes out of a single square and a single subtraction. Take their midpoint, square it, and subtract the square of the distance:

18 × 22 = 20 × 20 − 2 × 2 = 400 − 4 = 396

18 and 22 are both two away from twenty. Twenty squared is 400, two squared is 4, and the answer is 396.

47 × 53 = 2500 − 9 = 2491

How to spot it. Check whether the midpoint of the two factors is round. The quick way: if one is as far below a round number as the other is above it, the technique fits. 18 and 22, 47 and 53, 96 and 104.

It is at its best when the distance is small, because then the square being subtracted is tiny. At a distance of two there are only four to take off.

The midpoint does not have to be a multiple of ten, only one whose square you know. 23 × 27 is 625 − 4, which is 621, because 25 squared is 625.

Practise

The exercise always gives a pair whose midpoint is a multiple of ten and asks for the three steps separately. In a real calculation you have to spot the pair yourself, and that is where all the work in this technique lies.
