The index finger keys

The home row has eight home keys, but G and H sit next to F and J. To reach them the index finger steps one key inwards and comes straight back.

The hand as a whole does not move. Only the index finger travels; the other three fingers stay on their keys and hold the hand in place. If the whole hand follows, the way back is long and the next letter arrives late.

The index finger is the strongest and fastest finger, which is why it gets two columns. The same pattern repeats in the top row and the bottom row.

Capitals, punctuation and digits

• DigitsThe digit row is far away and out of sight. The only thing that helps is the right column.

Speed and accuracy

• Frequent letter pairsSpeed comes from a pair becoming one movement, not from a single keystroke getting faster.
• Frequent wordsA couple of hundred words cover most of everything you will ever type. They are worth a drill of their own.
• An even rhythmAn even pace beats bursts and pauses, even when it feels slower.
• Accuracy before speedA wrong letter costs more than a slow one. In the game too.
• Whole sentencesCapital at the front, full stop at the end, and every part working at once.
