Rounding in multiplication

When one factor sits close to a round number, multiply by the round one and correct afterwards. Multiplying by a round number is the times table with zeros on the end.

19 × 7 = 20 × 7 − 7 = 140 − 7 = 133

And the other way round, when the factor is above the round number:

21 × 6 = 20 × 6 + 6 = 120 + 6 = 126

There is one catch that differs from rounding in addition. When adding, you correct by exactly as much as you rounded. When multiplying, you correct by the gap times the other factor, because moving one factor by the gap moves the product by exactly that much. For 18 × 7 the correction is not two but 2 × 7, which is 14.

That is the step that goes wrong most often. When the gap is one, the correction is simply the other factor itself.

The technique covers every factor near ten, twenty, fifty or a hundred, so 19, 21, 48, 98 and the like. The exercise asks for the correction as a step of its own, because that is the one that goes wrong.
