Multiplying two-digit numbers
Multiplying two two-digit numbers is the same move as multiplying in parts, only the other factor is bigger. Split one factor into its tens and its units, and multiply the whole other factor by each part.
23 × 47 = 20 × 47 + 3 × 47 = 940 + 141 = 1081
What matters is that one factor is split, not both. Then there are two parts instead of four, and both are already familiar: a round number times a two-digit one, and a single digit times a two-digit one.
Which one to split? The one with the smaller units digit, because its units part is the easier one. In 23 × 47, split the 23, not the 47.
If one factor sits near a round number, rounding is faster: 48 × 23 is better done as 50 × 23 − 2 × 23. And if one factor is even while the other ends in five, look at halving.
For the final addition, use adding from the left. That way the whole operation is made of nothing but pieces that are already clear on their own.

This is the top end of mental arithmetic and also the thing every shortcut is a shortcut around. Once this method is second nature, there is no product that cannot be taken on in your head.

- Halving and doublingMultiplying by five is multiplying by ten and halving. Halving one factor while doubling the other leaves the product unchanged.
- Multiplying by elevenPull the digits apart and put their sum in the middle. When the sum goes past nine, carry one to the left-hand digit.
- Squaring any two-digit numberChoose the nearest multiple of ten. Move one factor to it and the other the same distance in the opposite direction, multiply the new factors, and add the square of the shift.
- Difference of squaresWhen two factors sit the same distance from a round number, square the number between them and subtract the square of the distance.
- Squaring numbers ending in fiveDrop the final five, multiply what is left by the next number up, and put 25 on the end. 35 squared is 3 × 4 and 25, which is 1225.
