Halving and doubling

Halving and doubling are the two easiest operations there are to do in your head. Two techniques come out of that.

Multiplying by five. Five is half of ten, so multiply by ten and halve:

34 × 5 = 340 : 2 = 170

The same idea extends: ×50 means ×100 and halve; ×25 means ×100 and divide by four. 34 × 25 = 3400 : 4 = 850.

Halve one, double the other. The product does not change if you halve one factor and double the other. That turns an awkward operation into an easy one:

18 × 45 = 9 × 90 = 810

The knack is choosing which way to transform. Halve the factor that is even and double the one that becomes round. 16 × 25 goes 8 × 50 and then 4 × 100, which is 400.

The transformation can be repeated until the operation is as easy as it will get.

Practise

The exercise mixes all four forms: multiplying by five, by fifty and by twenty-five, and the transformation where one factor is halved and the other doubled.
