Constant difference

The difference between two numbers does not change if you shift both by the same amount. That gives one of the fastest subtraction techniques: shift both until the number being taken away becomes round.

83 − 48 = 85 − 50 = 35

From 48 it is two up to the next ten, which a number bond to ten gives you, so add two to both. Subtracting a multiple of ten is easy to do mentally.

When the number being taken away sits just above a multiple of ten, shift both down instead: 83 − 52 = 81 − 50 = 31. The difference survives a shift in either direction, so pick whichever multiple of ten is nearer.

The important part is what is not here: a correction. With rounding you have to add something back or take something off at the end, and that is where mistakes happen. Here you do not, because the difference was the same from the start.

Picture two points on a ruler. Move them both the same distance to the right and the gap between them stays the same. Subtraction is that gap.

Practise

The exercise asks for three steps: how far to shift, the shifted minuend, and finally the subtraction with a multiple of ten. That third step is the whole reason the technique exists. In every task the number being taken away sits below a multiple of ten, so the shift goes up and is never more than five.
