Squaring numbers ending in five

Squaring a number that ends in five is one of the fastest things in all of mental arithmetic, because there is nothing to work out beyond a single times-table fact.

Drop the final five, multiply what is left by the next number up, and put 25 on the end:

35² → 3 × 4 = 12 → 1225

85² → 8 × 9 = 72 → 7225

The ending is always 25, whichever number you start from. Only the part in front changes.

Why it works. 35 squared is the same as 30 × 40 + 25. The two neighbouring multiples of ten multiply to 1200, and twenty-five goes on the end. The same holds for every number ending in five, and 30 × 40 is simply 3 × 4 with two zeros.

The technique carries on above a hundred as well: 105 squared is 10 × 11 with 25 on the end, which is 11025.
